For those who don't know, there's been a Geraldine Fibbers mailing list since about 1997, which had originated as a Geraldine Fibbers board on AOL. It's still active, but it's been quiet lately - I think it needs some new blood. I'd love to see some Fibbers/Meatplow/Scarnella fans who'd never been on the list join up.

The list is now generated from Carla's site - one of the site admins runs it - so you can sub from this linked page:

Carla at Southpaw tonight 8/13 Park Slope, Bkln

For NY/Brooklyn Carla fans, the Carla B. listed as the opening
act at Southpaw tonight on their website is in fact, Carla Bozulich.
The show is a benefit for wounded persons in Iraq and Carla's
the first opening act. See www.spsounds.com.

Carla's shows last weekend were amazing. In Williamsburg
she did some great new songs, plus The Small Song and
You Doo Right and Carla and her band that night including
Ches Smith, Shazahd Ismaely and Rebecca Gaffney tore
through the set despite technical glitches - broken bass stings,
mics unplugging, amps wigging out.

If you're a Carla fan, you should come out tonight even for
the short set and despite the heat - or maybe because of
it - come on - it's Southpaw - it'll be comfy and close to home,
and since she's playing first, you can support Carla and go
home early or support the entire card and either way you
support a good cause!

Carla tourdates in Northeast

My turn to paste in the latest news from the email newsletter:

Upcoming shows in the Northeast:

August 5 - NYC @ The Stone w/ Christian Marclay and Okyung Lee
http://www.thestonenyc.com

August 6 - Brooklyn, NY @ TBA w/ Amps for Christ, Gowns, Mutant Life Expectancy

Special guests: Shahzad Ismaily, Erika Anderson and Rebecca Gaffney and maybe Ches Smith

August 7 - Brattleboro, VT @ The Loft w/ Amps for Christ, Gowns
74 Cottonmill Hill
Brattleboro, VT

August 10 - Montreal @ Casa del Popolo w/ Amps for Christ, Gowns
http://www.casadelpopolo.com/

August 13 - Boston, MA @ Jamaica Plain w/ Amps for Christ, Gowns and whoever else
I am not officially on this show but hope to be added and at any rate will be crashing it for sure. I'll be loud and musical in Boston that nite.

August 16 - NYC @ Tonic w/ Amps for Christ, Gowns
This whole nite is an amazing line-up. First of all, and I think on a separate (early) show Sylvie Courvoisier and Ikue Mori will be playing. Amps for Christ play at 9:30 sharp. Gowns play at 10:30 and then my show will have amazing guests! Al Kyzis and Norman Westberg (both ex-Swans), Carla Kihlstedt, Shahzad Ismaily, Ezra Buchla and Jenny Scheinman and maybe Ches! http://www.tonicnyc.com

The other shows will have surprise guests as well.

I'll be recording while I'm there-- a couple of tracks with Book of Knots - a project with a revolving and numerous array of earth's finest musicians.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I have been advertised as playing in Brooklyn on 8/20. I have no idea where that came from, but unfortunately I will not even in NY that day.

In the words of the compelling Erika Anderson, who plays in both of the following marvelous bands:

"GOWNS are the new wave of folk noise because we have a computer. It's pretty and kind of sloppy but not totally incompetent, chaotic but dynamic as well."

You can listen at:
http://www.myspace.com/gowns or http://www.myrobobedroom.com

"AMPS FOR CHRIST were one of my favorite bands before I started playing guitar with them, and they still are! Oscillators and Celtic ballads, Chinese
dulcimers and homemade sitars. This is the first real tour, especially on the east coast. I would say this band is one of - if not THE - originator of
experimental noise/folk. Ex-man is the bastard. Big beard."

http://www.ampsforchrist.com

And I, Carla, add: Henry from AFC is one of the few great musicians who can pull off a beard.

Hello, chums.

A few things going on... First and worst - the European tour about which I neglected to give you the tourdates - has been canceled except for one and possibly one more date in Switzerland. The Night Porter had a whole tour booked w/ SC3 and Sleepytime which fell apart at the ripe old time of last week. I'm still playing (it looks like solo) in Dudingen, Switzerland at the festival Bad Bonn Kilbey on June 10th, and probably June 11th in Luzern at BOA Kulturhallen. I'll play anywhere if anyone wants to set it up or jump me onto a show. I'd like to end up in Amsterdam on June 23rd and 24th because Fibbers' violinist and world citizen Leyna Papach has created - and is directing - a music/theatre/dance performance those nights and I want to be there. A few shows not too far apart from each other and I could stay. It's too late to book through normal channels but e-mail me if you have an idea.

10th June: Düdingen (near Fribourg) @ Bad Bonn Festival http://www.badbonn.ch
11th June: Luzern @ BOA Kulturhallen

For those who knew about the tour w/ Sleepytime and SC3, I would check their websites cuz I don't think they'll be at Bad Bonn, in fact Sleepytime has definitely canceled and SC3 is... well, MIA. The festival is going to be great, though. I've performed solo only a few times but I'll have doubled that in a month. Very economical, if not scary as hell. My voice is so... nude. Ha! I laugh in the face of danger!! To those who don't like to hear me speak of fear or other more mortal conditions because it sullies their image of me grinding a dirty boot into their face (I get commentaries on these newsletters), please click the "unsubscribe" link.

Three more shows are booked:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Please join us for an enchanting evening featuring music by:

Gowns, Carla Bozulich, Kraig Grady, Tehn, Dave Kendall, Albert Ortega, Corey Fogel

Film and projections by: Kate Dollenmayer, Laida, Lertxundi, K. Cain

To be followed by a drunk-ass dance party featuring fake punch and vintage Italian pornography

Saturday, April 30th at the Metro Gallery--
64 N. Raymond Ave, Pasadena --- $5 donation, 8 pm

The flyer can be downloaded at: http://aulos.calarts.edu/~ebuchla/metroflyer

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Music In A Small Resonant Train Station Waiting Room is a guerilla event I've been aiming to put on for a long time. Show up at the little train station in Glendale, CA on Sunday, May 8th at 3:00. There'll be a bunch of us singing and playing, sometimes together, different combos, etc. You can sing, too. The room is absurdly resonant. That's where the idea came from. I was struck by the resonance as I showed up night after night last year chasing after trains--- recording them for the Fever Dreams performance at the Getty. The thing is, with those acoustics no amplification is necessary. So rare. Normally singing without being filtered through a bunch of wires is also scary to me, but in that room it pretty much swims huge with sound. We'll be there until sundown or so. There's always the chance someone will try to throw us out, but we'll blindside them with the effervescent manna of song. This show is really "all ages" as I think there's about a 30-year span from youngest to oldest musician. It's free. You're encouraged to take the train or Metrolink to the station. The musicians, as it stands, are Gowns, Adele Bertei, Whitman, Badwater Bob, Garrett Devoe, Shahzad Ismaily, Kaveh Rastegar, and Jeremy Drake. My pal Steak will oversee the proceedings.

A link to the flyer can be found here: http://www.carlabozulich.com/assets/pastedGraphic8.gif

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The 3rd show is Blast! [2] - A benefit to support Sound. And SASSAS.
These are the people who helped me put on the Fake Party a few years ago.

Sunday, May 22nd, 2005, 4-8pm At a private residence in Beverly Hills.
NOTE: The tickets for this are $40.

Featuring performances by Carla Bozulich + Goliath Birdeater, Raymond Pettibon and Dos.
Plus an art auction and iPod raffle.

Proceeds from Blast! [2] will benefit our summer concert series, Sound.
We need your help to raise the funds for ambitious shows and to continue our on-going support of sound
projects and experimental music in Los Angeles. http://www.sassas.org/blast/index.shtml

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Lastly, Ches and I have sent our new CD to a few labels and I've also sent out some live Night Porter tracks to a few good labels. Keep your fingers crossed that these will be sorted out easy and fast.

And, as my booking agent in Switzerland, Pascal, says, "Good-bye. We will see us very soon."

Did anyone go to see The Night Porter at Spaceland
yesterday? I heard one quick review saying the show
was great and that they played "I Killed the Cuckoo"
along with the Night Porter songs, and that Bill Tutton
was in the audience. Any more detailed things to share?

i don't know if there are any other new yorkers in
this tribe, but if you're a new yorker and love carla,
you've been to tonic. since the fibbers broke up,
tonic has probably hosted more shows featuring carla -
scarnella shows, improv shows, a straight performance
of red headed stranger, a show on the rhs tour that took
place the next year, and two shows in the past few months -
a show in which a smaller version of what's become
the night porter previewed some new songs, and the
show the day after new years in which carla read and
sang poetry with a small improv group. no venue in
ny has been more supportive or more willing to showcase
both carla and nels.

this was forwarded from the tonic email list:

HELP SAVE TONIC!
Since 1998 Tonic has been a haven for creative music.
We have helped nurture the vital community of musicians and audiences who keep this music alive. Now we are in danger of closing and ask you to help us keep Tonic alive.

Over the past few years we have suffered a series of blows: our rent has doubled since 1998, our insurance costs have tripled,
we’ve been robbed, and we’ve been plagued by the expense of
maintaining a building in ill repair –
including the collapse of our main sewer line.
Any of these things would be challenging on their own
but together they’ve taken a more serious toll and we are now facing the threat of eviction.

A number of outstanding musicians have come forward to
help save Tonic and throughout February we will be holding
a series of fundraising concerts. If Tonic has been an important venue to you, we ask that you please attend as many
of these concerts as possible.

Those who cannot attend but would like to help, please consider making a contribution.
For Tonic to survive we will need to raise a upwards of $100,000 in the next few weeks.
Only with your support can Tonic continue playing its role in presenting this important music to its fans.
Our deepest thanks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What you can do:
attend the benefit concerts
contact us about making a contribution
For more info please go to www.tonicnyc.com
Hello there. Sorry I didn't get the word out about recent gigs. The Scarnella show on Saturday night was damn fun, but I’ll tell you what's up right now. My band that opened for Wilco in November now has a name: The Night Porter. We’ll be playing from time to time, though we are somewhat scattered geographically - and just plain scattered.
The Night Porter is playing 2 gigs in February and probably more, but I don't know all the shows yet. I booked the Spaceland show only 2 weeks before the gig, so please help get the word out.
February 1st at Spaceland:
The Night Porter
The Nels Cline Singers
Good For Cows
(Good for Cows is a duo with the Night Porter's drum wiz, Ches Smith and, from The Nels Cline Singers, Devin Hoff on bass. Devin is also the mad double bassist inside my version of the Red Headed Stranger. Scott Amendola (from Red Headed Stranger) is the drummer in The Singers. Jessica Catron, cellist in The Night Porter is in Nels' group, The Blue Mitt Ensemble. Shahzad Ismaily, bassist/guitar from The Night Porter has played with every single person on the whole evenings' bill at one time or another, as well as most everyone I’ve ever met. You really must have a chat with Shazad. He’s a peach. The tangled web we weave...)
http://clubspaceland.com/
February 11th at The Smell:
7 Year Rabbit Cycle (Ex-member of Deerhoof and members of K.I.T., Good For Cows, Megaweapon and Chen Santa Maria from Oakland)
The Night Porter
Warbler (members of XBXRX, K.I.T. and Li'l Pocket Knife from Oakland)
Rose for Bohdan (members of Foot Village and House 1 and 2)
Amps for Christ
Plus DJ Wesley Snipes (Member of Captain Ahab)
http://www.thesmell.org/
As always, get exact directions and please be VERY careful when walking to or from The Smell. Promise?
Until then....
The following is sent from Carla's e-list...I've got my 2 tickets for the SF show!
:::::::
Hi pals, things are amazing. I've been writing music with a new band: Ches Smith (drums), Shahzad Ismaily (guitar/bass) and Jessica Catron (cello/bass). We have written 12 songs and are gonna bring 'em to you on these coming shows. Here's the rub: the promoter in SF at the Swedish American Hall is talking about yanking the show because they have only sold 5 tickets. The Portland and Bellingham club shows also need support, badly. If you are planning to go to one of them you might wanna get a ticket now or call and ask something, anything...tell them you heard that you'd get in for half price if you came dressed as a piece of fruit or something. Please bring along your friends! If you don't live in one of these towns please tell your friends that live where we're playing that they will miss the most bitchin' ass, depthy (a fake word I love to use because it makes Nels go all professor-ish) songs and sounds available to humankind, period. Plus, call or email college radio - A lot of times if they know the word is not getting out on a show they will help!
If you have any great ideas for getting the word out, will you email us at info@carlabozulich.com?
Happy voting!
xcarla
PS - The new music rocks and then is delicate and has explosions and tons of words and voice. The music is soaring. Not a country project. Not for those adverse to sadness or hilarity.
This is one of the best radio stations in the country. At the very least surf over and just listen:
NEWS FROM CARLA BOZULICH
Well, hey there. Carla here. It's been a while. I'm gonna tell you something about where I'm coming from (inside) and where I'm going (in the van).
It feels strange to be promoting my music when the US government and lots of actual people seem to be headed toward global imperialism ---and not of the benevolent kind. I'm at my wits end from thinking on the ramifications of these complicated politics, the way that people are hurt and dead and the huge consequences of any society emerging as a self-entitled, superior entity. For what it's worth, I think if we defeat Bush at the polls in November this trend will lose much momentum. I'm actually sensing that the upcoming election might be the most relevant political event of my life to date.
Love will prevail.
Nov. 19 Los Angeles The Wiltern Theatre
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you may know, I have a duo album in the works with the best drummer I know, Ches Smith. It's about 3/4 done and is one of the fav things I've worked on. It's turning out to be really fucked! (in the best of ways!) like if Alice (from Wonderland) had a bastard daughter with a really mentally and emotionally hyper-active Ingmar Bergman. The trouble is, I've been detoured by an obsession with melodic, song-structured music writing again. I know from the mail I get that this will be happy news for many, so top o the day to you! Some dark stuff is bubbling up from the 6 strings and the little books and pens and gum wrappers.. And, the Ches thing will be finished, in time.
I want to tell you a little about our band for the Wilco tour. The four of us will make a mighty splash!
Many of you know all about Ches Smith and have seen him play with me a lot, he goes anywhere, and I mean anywhere, that he feels like on the drums and does it with fun and soul. He plays in 17,63.08 projects. Go on to his website to find out more.
Shahzad Ismaily of NYC is not only a free spirited, multi-instrumentalist and a musical inspiration and influence on me but he makes me laugh when it REALLY counts You know someone like that? I hope so. He's got a brilliant mind for science and mathematics who made his living that way before the lifestyle of weirdo arts and music took over completely (incidentally---much like another hero, Ray Pettibone). Lots of you know Shahzad from 2 Foot Yard and from playing with me on the Family Van Tour.
Now on to the lovely Jessica Catron. She lives in LA (!). Shes played all over the world. On this tour well be playing mostly songs with traditional structure, and she has beautiful feel for this and other written music. These days though, she mainly dwells in less charted territory (pun intended). The possibilities in that dimension --- even the tiniest of openings to improvisation and abstract sound make my music, even the most traditional of songs breathe clearly. The four of us agree on that point so were destined for jolly confusion and dirt pop silky sunken hammer pistol alkaline landslide dollops. But back to the amazing girl, Jessica C. Her CD "Five Violoncello Solos" is an exploration in de-tunings, five microphones, steel wool, a metal mute, and the seventh partial. www.experimentalmusicalresearch.com . On the tour I have coming up the coast I'll need help getting the word out. We may even have to do the shows unannounced. If interested in helping please v isit carlabozulich.com and press “Contact.” Thank you.
I bring greetings from Nels Cline! He's having a blast - some really surreal new experiences, lately. Like playing in front of 50,000 people at some festival in Austin who actually seemed, as a group, to be riveted by the entire set. I guess he's played in front of a crowd that size once before but the audience wasn't having it. Both scenarios sound really like you'd better hope you're in the right mood for it! Anyway, the release of Nels' new album of improvised and composed instrumental (but for Greg from Deerhoof singing angel sounds on one track) mayhem has been delayed a few months, but I think you can get it by going to his bitchin' label (cryptogramophone.com). The album is called “The Giant Pin” and is the best thing in the world. Especially, “He Still Carries A Torch For Her!”
Ok, loves. Thanks for listening. I'll see you around somewhere.
